A meeting of both houses of parliament will begin today
The agenda does not include new NAB legislation or legislation related to the extension of Army Chief
Islamabad (UrduPoint Newspaper-International Press Agency-Jan-Jan-2020) The government has called for a joint meeting of the two Houses of Parliament today, but NAB's new law or Army Chief's extension to the first day's agenda of both Houses. Does not include related legislation. Opposition leaders have long been criticizing the government for not calling the National Assembly and especially the Senate, but now opposition parties are also surprised about the urgent meetings.
The Senate is meeting at the request of the opposition after 124 days. The last meeting of the upper house was on September 3, while the National Assembly session was adjourned to December 16.
The Senate has been called at three o'clock in the afternoon, while the National Assembly session is called at four o'clock in the evening.
Today's agenda issued by the National Assembly involves the submission of the report of the Standing Committee on the amendment of the Pakistan Academy of Letters Act and the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2019, while the Senate has a much longer agenda. The 38-point agenda of the House includes amendments to the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2010 and the Foreign Exchange Regulation Bill 2019, but neither the Army Chief's term extension nor NAB's law amendments are on this agenda.
According to the constitution, there should be at least two to three meetings of the National Assembly in one year and after one meeting there should be no interval of more than 120 days. According to political analysts, today's two meetings are smokeless. The opposition may not have liked the NAB amendment ordinance at all, and the government has been subject to severe criticism.
The PTI government has also been accused of ignoring parliament in the past year, and it is speculated that the government may want to bring the parliament to the main stage of politics from these meetings. Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said at a press conference after the cabinet meeting yesterday that the government has decided to pass the NAB law from both the Houses of Parliament. We do not want to enforce this law so that is why we are going to parliament Opposition fears can be resolved so that the government is not going to force it It will become law when Parliament is sealed. The government says it is aware that the opposition in the Senate is leading, so their role will be important.
